|
|
I have a separate /home partition and two other partitions reserved for versions of Fedora (1 x current version & 1 x previous). It is my habit, whenever a new version of Fedora comes out, to do a clean install over the last-but-one Fedora version (i.e FC7 replaces FC5 - that way I always have the previous - FC6 in this case - version to fall back on) and point the partitioner to the /home partition with the "preserve existing data" option set.
I did that with Fedora 7 and the install went just fine... (I do have a Dell dual core desktop but it all seemed to work with the default settings).
I went through the first-time-install process and set my user to be "mark" (me). The log-in screen accepted my password and started to load. It never gets beyond painting the background image (sometimes the top and bottom gnome panels load but without any menus or icons).
I eventually solved this by deleting (moving really) my .gconf folder. That enabled me to log in to my shiny new F7 distro and all was well with the world.
That was until I decided to turn on the "system sounds" (I know they're a bit naff but I kind of like a little "plink" sound when I open a new window). Once again, I cannot then log into my user account. The background image loads, some of the gnome panels load, the welcome sound plays and then... nothing. Lock up.
The only remedy is to reboot into FC6 (which uses the same /home partition - and where the system sounds work just fine - so not a hardware problem) and turn off system sounds. I can then log back into F7 just fine.
Is this a bug?
Anyone else have this problem?

Here's an excerpt from a bugzilla report so you are not alone and there is a fix:
| Quote: | Description of problem:
When I start a Gnome session, it is very slow to load the desktop. I have let
it sit for 10 minutes at least and the toolbars still do not come up. I have
just upgraded from FC6. I can start a KDE session with no problem. I am on a
Dell Inspiron B130.
Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):
How reproducible:
Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1. Log in using a Gnome session
2.
3.
Actual results:
Slow to bring up desktop enviroment
I have a simple work around that works on my laptop (NVIDIA MPC51)
There seem to be upstream in the the esound package that will eventually work
its way into a fedora update. I'll post back if i can re-find the upstream bug
report
edit /etc/esd.conf
change
default_options=
to
default_options=-nobeeps -unix -as 2 |
It could already be resolved via updates by now if not try the fix listed.

OK - Thanks for that!
The workaround certainly now allows me to log in with system sounds enabled but... errmm.... I now have no sound. At all...
It's not because of the edit to /etc/esd.conf (I removed the edit and tried again). It may be due to some of the fiddling I did previously but now even the "Soundcard Detection" utility won't play any sounds. (I have checked that the sound is unmuted - that gotcha got me before - and tried alsamixer) I now have no sound of any sort in F7.
FC6 (on the same PC) still plays music / sounds etc just as before so it's not a H/W problem.
I've borked something - what do I do now?...
Thanks again....

STOP PRESS
It works!
No - I don't know what I did. In fact, I swear, I did nothing at all. I went to bed last night, turned the computer on this morning to check my mail (mainly to look here to see if there had been a response to my plea for help) and ta-da, I was greeted by the welcome sound of the slightly morose errr... welcome sound.
Perhaps it was tired poor thing - just needed a night's rest.
Anyway, I have now edited my grub.conf and ceremonially changed the default boot target from FC6 to F7. Fedora 7 is now my main distro!
Thanks to all
