escputil - Epson printer ink levels

Postby bof » Sat Sep 09, 2006 10:05 am

I have an Epson Stylus C64 printer and it prints ok from Ubuntu.
My problem is that I can't see what the ink levels are. In Windows I had the Status Monitor.
Using Synaptics I installed escputil and when I ran the command line to show ink levels I get:-
tony@tony-laptop:~$ escputil -i|--ink-level
bash: --ink-level: command not found
Obtaining ink levels requires using a raw device.
tony@tony-laptop:~$

Any suggestions as to what I do next?

Isn't there a front-end called mtink that you can use for this. I have used it under a variety of Linuxes when I had an Epson printer.

Thanks Rhakios, I followed your suggestion and it "almost" works except I get a message "No access to printer device file. Please make sure mtlink has enough right for accessing the device files"
Any ideas what this lot means?
I followed up on the author's website http://xwtools.automatix.de/english/startE.htm and note that the Epson Stylus C62 is not supported and that the site doesn't seem to have been updated since 2002.
A pity because it did look to be a promising solution.

Actually, you might notice the Status Monitor for Epson inkjet printers was updated May 2006, so it's far from dead. Also, in the README for that file, you will find the C60 listed as known to work, the C64 is probably a variant of this printer.
As for the error message about access rights, this can usually be fixed by running mtink as root, not elegant, but it usually works.

This is an invalid command, the #|' is a pipe character, it is taking the output from "escputil -i" and passing to to the command "--ink-level", which doesn't exist.

However, in the man page, the | is used to represent an either/or choice, it means that -i and --ink-level are the short and long options of same thing. Run one of

Code: Select all
escputil -i
escputil --ink-level

Thanks for that, sudo mtink did the trick and I even managed to find the C64 listed so it is all working nicely.
Yet another trip to my XP partition has been eliminated. Only one more task to go before I can forget XP.

Thanks Nelz, but I couldn't get escputil under control. Mtink will do me nicely.
I'm thinking of updating my signature to something along the lines of Ringo's "yes, I get by with a little help from my friends"

When running escputil to get ink levels, you will need direct access to the printer.

Under ubuntu, you will need to "sudo -i" with your user password to get root access, then type:

escputil -i -r /dev/usb/lp0

or whatever port your Epson printer is connected. Direct printer access is needed to send the ESC/P2 codes needed to get ink levels.

RE: Unnatural problem with Epson Stylus c67

I use a different system, and the software may be older.

Install cups (print server / queue manager)
install gimp-print (contains epson drivers)
install libinklevel (library file used by other apps, such as ink, to read levels)
install ink (ink -d /dev/usblp0 will check ink levl on usb printer)

Just some things for you to try if no-one else comes back with anything.
Use the above names and search Yast to see if they are available for suse, might use different setup.
I think, therefore I compile

Thanks for plugging your company here lucyrssll. Oh wait, are you the same lucyrssll who's banned from the Mac Rumors forums, and who has posted the same spam on the OpenSUSE Forum, among other places?

Get off my interwebs.

Try mtink again but make sure you are a member of both lpadmin and lp groups and it should then work as user and not need root.

I'm running Ubuntu gutsy with Epson Stylus Color 1400 via USB and getting high failure rate when running
sudo escputil -i -r /dev/usb/lp0

One out of ten times it will work but the remaining attempts wind up reporting "Unknown IEEE 1284.4 error number 66" or "Unknown IEEE 1284.4 error number 69".

I don't get intermittent problems like this when trying to print anything so it's strange.

Does anyone have a way I might fix this problem?

When used in a bash terminal in Kubuntu 10.4 it gives the info without problems.
I have Kubuntu 10.4 and run an Epson R300.
The moment I gave the command in , it shows me :

scputil version 5.2.5, Copyright (C) 2000-2006 Robert Krawitz
Escputil comes with ABSOLUTELY NO WARRANTY; for details type 'escputil -l'

Zwart 81

Geel 68

the only little snag is that it asks for the password before giving the info.

Unlikely for an Epson printer.

linux1968 are you a member of the lpadmin group? OTOH if scputil is getting information from too low a level for normal users to access you might need to make it suid (or some modification to /etc/sudoers), with the associated security risk. Is typing in your password too much of a chore?
There used to be a nice little gui for epson printers, can't remember its name now.
