USB to Ethernet adapter advice

Postby cmcevoy » Fri Jun 04, 2010 10:06 pm

I've a small form factor machine running Mandriva that MESH sent back from the 'repair' shop with a broken ethernet port. Normally I'd fight but I'm too busy at the moment and I thought the easiest way to get ethernet would be a USB adaptor. Experimentally bought a (really) cheap one which turned out to be an adm851x chipset and is not recognized by several distributions. Has anyone got a recommendation for a (currently available) adaptor that works with Linux?
Thanks,
Charles

This one. A long time since I've used it, but I've just plugged it into my Ubuntu box and dmesg shows:

Code: Select all
[41809.020056] usb 2-8: new full speed USB device using ohci_hcd and address 5
[41809.253297] usb 2-8: configuration #1 chosen from 1 choice
[41809.516790] rtl8150: v0.6.2 (2004/08/27):rtl8150 based usb-ethernet driver
[41809.521635] rtl8150 2-8:1.0: eth1: rtl8150 is detected
[41809.521658] usbcore: registered new interface driver rtl8150
[41809.806237] net eth1: eth1: allmulti set
[41809.806308] net eth1: eth1: allmulti set
[41809.808944] net eth1: eth1: allmulti set
[41809.808996] net eth1: eth1: allmulti set
[41820.520031] eth1: no IPv6 routers present

So, as you can see it uses the rtl8150 driver (a small detail I couldn't recall).
