NETGEAR DGB111GT

Postby tedius » Mon Sep 05, 2005 8:12 am

I've just signed up to Tiscali Broadband, and I was thinking of taking PC World up on their offer of a half-price wireless broadband packet.

http://www.pcworld.co.uk/martprd/product/seo/757871

The question I have are;

1/ If you connect to the modem via Ethernet then there should be no compatiblely problems with Linux?

2/ Does anyone know how good/bad the Netgear DGB111GT is?

Thanks

PS. I'm not worried about the usb fob working with Linux as that will be for my wife's WinXP laptop.

I've got a DG834GT and I can't recommend it. I've had some serious problems, replacing 2 faulty units in 6 months. I've also had great difficulty getting problems through to Netgear's support. I'm not the only one, have a look at Netgear's wireless forums:

http://forum1.netgear.com/support/viewforum.php?f=6

My first unit failed after a couple of weeks of contantly dropping the ADSL connection. My second unit worked ok (with numerous ADSL connections being dropped), but the wireless signal dropped after about a month. That's a difficult problem to explain to support, when they're convinced you've placed the router on top of the Microwave. My third unit works, and has an uptime of several months.... It wouldn't suprise me if there was a hardware revision tucked in there somewhere. On a side note, I've had no problems at all with Netgear GT PCI or PCMCIA cards.

Thanks for that graham,

I've now decided to go with a "Linksys Wireless-g Adsl2+ Modemrouter"
http://www.ebuyer.com/customer/products/index.html?action=c2hvd19wcm9kdWN0X292ZXJ2aWV3&product_uid=94178
(sorry for the long URL)

It seems to have good reviews on the eBuyer web site. I know it isn't as fast
as the Netgear, but it should be more than sufficient for the sort of think I want it for.

If anyone thinks that this is a good/bad modem, please let me know as I probably wont put my order in until Monday 12th Sep

Thanks
