Just thought I'd point you to that - you might find it as useful as I'm going to.

Do you know of a way of labelling/relabelling a partition that already exists and which contains data - ie without damaging the partition or corrupting the data. I've only been able to label partitions when first creating them. I've looked in Gparted, qtparted, fdisk at the cli and Acronis Disk Director in Windows (which deals with Linux partitions very nicely), but I've never yet found a way to do this.

hiya

TBH no not really reliably.

in theory dos will retrospectively add a label of upto 11 characters.

but it is not guaranteed, hence the trick of making a txt file for ID.

Oh I hadn't realised that the colour coding was significant. If I want a distro that will plant my emails in the same folder as my Window box, will run Quicken and Dreamweaver, recognise my scanner and my wireless card and ... oh yes, let me run a second monitor (19") at the same time,,,, wel. what colour distro would that be?
Just to let you know that I have got Suse working ok again.
I managed it by logging in to the terminal mode, getting into the text version of YaST and adding a new user account. I then logged in successfully as the new user and deleted the old broken user.
My thanks to all of you for your help.
Now then . .... which one should I use? Suse or ubuntu

Ubuntu sets it up if you tell it to during the install. It generally tries to mount all NTFS and FAT partitions into strange places. So yes it detects them but you will have to change the mount points manually (unless you manually partition the HDD during install like I do).

Do you know of a way of labelling/relabelling a partition that already exists and which contains data - ie without damaging the partition or corrupting the data. I've only been able to label partitions when first creating them. I've looked in Gparted, qtparted, fdisk at the cli and Acronis Disk Director in Windows (which deals with Linux partitions very nicely), but I've never yet found a way to do this.

                                      hiya

there are a coupla ways to ID a drive/partition.

a simple way is to create a TEXT file named as the drive. it can be 0 bytes long.
E_drive.txt on the root of E: drive will ID it.
Ubuntu.txt on the root of Ubuntu /dev/hda4 or whatever.

another way is to give the drive/partition a label. i have an externel drive that connects via USB cable.

i named it TEEDRIVE and when it is detected it shows up in windows and LINUX as TEEDRIVE.
it may be E: TEEDRIVE in explorer, and /dev/sda1 TEEDRIVE in linux but at least i recognise it;)
It picked up my fat32 partition, as well as all the other partitions, automagically on install without me having to lift a finger. Now I just have to click on one of the icons littering my desktop. (Bit of a mess after the minimalist look of Breezy though. ). Gid 46 is plugdev group. This is really impressive. Dapper is going to be something very special. I've already got xgl working very nicely in it and enabling the nvidia driver was one of the easiest things I've done in Linux so far.

bof, I'll look out for your new thread tomorrow or whenever. We'll need detailed information on your partition layout, but (of course) there's an easy way to get this in Dapper.* I'll tell you where the GUI app is when you've posted. And we also need to clarify one thing that puzzled me from your previous thread. In that, if memory serves my right, you said your fat32/Windows E: partition was hdc6. As you'll see from GMorgan's post, that means that it's on your third hard drive. On a laptop? I'm intrigued. And if the sda's in my fstab are confusing you, that's because it's a serial ata drive. hdx=ide (parallel ata) drive. sdx=sata or scsi (and also usb memory devices).

Edit * There's an even easier way. You post the contents of /etc/fstab like I've just done. I think I'll go to bed now.
